Urquhart Castle

  • 2 min read

Perched on the banks of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic ruins, steeped in over a thousand years of history. Once a mighty stronghold, it played a pivotal role during the Wars of Scottish Independence and endured centuries of raids and sieges, especially by the Lords of the Isles. Though partially destroyed in 1692 to prevent Jacobite occupation, its dramatic silhouette still commands the landscape. Visitors can explore the towering Grant Tower, peer into the ancient prison cell, and soak up panoramic views of the loch—perhaps even spotting a ripple from the elusive Nessie. With its blend of legend, conflict, and Highland beauty, Urquhart Castle remains a timeless sentinel of Scotland’s past.

Ferghas' Adventures

Ferghas clopped quietly along the edge of Urquhart Castle, the wind tugging at his shaggy coat as Loch Ness shimmered below. The ruins loomed above the cliff, proud and broken, whispering secrets to the breeze.

As he sniffed near the Grant Tower, a soft shimmer appeared a pale figure in faded tartan, eyes kind and curious. “You’re not the usual visitor,” the ghost said with a smile. “But you’ve got the heart of a Highlander.”

Ferghas blinked, unsure if he should bolt or bow. But the ghost only chuckled. “I once watched over this place. Now I just tell stories to those who listen.”

They stood together for a moment hoof and haunt watching the loch ripple below. Then, with a wink, the ghost faded into the mist, leaving Ferghas with a tale only the wind could repeat.
